Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat spider veins (thread veins) and some small varicose veins. A clinician injects a special solution (called a sclerosant) into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and gradually be absorbed by the body. The treated vein fades over several weeks to months.

  • Compression stockings are often recommended for several days to a few weeks after treatment.
  • Improvement is usually visible within 2–12 weeks, depending on vein size.
  • Multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.
  • Common temporary side effects include bruising, redness, itching, and mild pigmentation changes.

Benefits:

  • Many veins disappear during the session
  • Skin looks clearer immediately or shortly after
  • Once sealed, that specific vein does not return
  • New veins can still form elsewhere (normal)
  • Very quick treatment per vein
  • You can go back to normal activities same day
  • No bandages or heavy aftercare
  • Targets only the visible vein
  • Does not damage surrounding skin
  • Patients can typically return to normal activities quickly
